Till we meet again

My dear friends,

It is with heavy heart that I pen this note. It was nearly 10 years ago that Paddy’s opened its doors to the community to come and enjoy themselves while indulging in the finest cup of coffee in Union City. My wife and I were apprehensive when we opened the doors, not knowing how the community would receive us. Our apprehensions have been laid to rest. Never have we seen so many arms circling us.

The past few years have been a challenge to running a small business. We have tried our best to stay abreast of the changing economic climate and also catering to the changing palettes of the customers.

Our lease is over at the end of November. It has been a veritable task running the business at this current location for the past few years so we are opting out. Paddy’s Coffee House as you know it, at the corner of Smith and Watkins will now be a wonderful memory of the past. Our last day of operation will be 14th of December, 2012, and we plan to have a big party on the 15th of December.

What does the future hold for us ? We see the Paddy’s brand continuing with product offerings including a diverse range of ethnic and contemporary baked products. We are partnering with a local baker to give you the best that there will be in terms of coffee, tea, sandwiches and baked pastries while staying true to our philosophy of community service. We are actively scouting out locations and will keep you informed of our new home. Please follow us on facebook (http://www.facebook.com/paddyscoffee) or twitter (http://www.twitter.com/paddyscoffee) to stay abreast of our future.

My wife, my colleagues (past and present) and I wish to thank all of you for your support through the years. Hope to see you at Paddy’s before we shutter the doors for good.

Your humble servant

Paddy Iyer

  1. it will be weird... from going to have the mind set of knowing that this little cafe is there, to having some where else to go...... Paddy though usually was a study ground for students, it was a place where i could get away from every thing. place to go read for an hour or 2 without my phone. always with friendly faces and wonderful service... Paddy's will be missed.

  3. I really felt that paddy's was a very integrative part of the community. One of those great businesses that had some heart. Hopefully this establishment will rise again wherever it maybe and if it's local I'll be sure to support it!

  4. Union city is at a loss without Paddy's. Now, there is no cultural hub. I am saddened.

  5. I have been coming here since it opened 10 years ago and I remember coming here to study for my midterms and finals for college, playing scrabble with my sisters , and friends. This will be sad not having Paddy's around. It is a great loss to this community. WIll be there before the shop closes.

  10. I wish I could just open my house to Paddy and all the Paddy's patrons. It will be so sad when Paddy's is shuttered. I am hopeful for news of a new haunt.

  11. It's a shame. But I know about how tought it is to run a business these days. You've made a tremendous impact on the commmunity. A gathering place to talk, read, meet friends. I'll miss writing there on weekends, sipping my coffee and watching life happen outside the windows. But don't fear change, embrace it as it may very well open up a whole new world....all the best and I'll be sure to visit the new location whenever that happens...

    Cheers,

    Jesus

  12. I am horribly saddened to hear this news. Just when I thought Union City was gaining some sense of culture outside of cookie box restaurants. Bidding you well.

  13. I am surprised and saddened as well... you are a treasure, which I was just getting to know. THANK YOU for being a beating pulse of the community. Your creativity will certainly help in finding a perfect landing spot from which you will thrive.

  14. This is so upsetting to hear. I wasn't a regular at Paddy's, but no matter how long it was between visits, my face was never forgotten. This coffee shop was a true community hot spot. I've been here to catch up with old friends, do homework, or just grab a bagel. I grew up with this shop in my life, and I'm so sad to see it go ): I wish you the best of luck in the future, wherever it may take you, Paddy! <3

  15. Paddy is a great guy. Very awesome place he has. Can't a few millionaires just chip in and help keep this place where it is? :) Paddys is one of the few welcoming, true community-based places in this area and now it's going? What a shame.

... now it's back to the plazas full of big name places, annoying wanna-bes, and crowded parking lots to get some coffee and meet with friends.

    Sigh.

    Good luck Paddy!
